Player onboarding and account claiming
This page explains how account linking works for players and which settings can change the experience.
What this feature does
Account linking connects your dzbot account (which is authenticated through discord) with your in-game character. Once linked, the system knows who you are and can apply the right permissions, access, and community actions.
How onboarding works for players
- the player accesses the domain of the server with no prior authentication.
- the player authenticates with discord -> a new user is created in the system.
- the player is redirected to the claim page where they can claim their in-game account using their username.
- dzbot checks if this account can be linked (see "Why linking can fail").
- Depending on the server settings, the player is asked to verify their position in the game (see "Player position verification").
- If everything is correct, the account is linked right away.
After that, the player can continue in the shop as their linked character.
Why linking can fail
Linking is blocked when the system detects something unsafe or inconsistent. Common reasons include:
The account is already linked
If the account is already linked, the system will not allow linking again. This extends to alt-accounts, so when the to-be-linked account has ever played on a device that already has a linked account, the linking process will fail, too. To bypass this (e.g. when two players actually share the same device), open up a ticket in the support channel.
The account has an active ban
If the account has an active ban restriction, the system will not allow linking.
The position verification is not correct
If enabled, the position verification needs to succeed for a successful link. If the player does not remember their position and selects the wrong option, the link will fail and after multiple attempts, the account will be blocked.
The in-game account is not yet synced
New players are synced through imported server logs. Sometimes this data arrives with delay.
Practical expectation:
- players should usually play at least 5-10 minutes before first sync checks
- then allow extra time for import processing (often ~10-20 minutes, sometimes longer)
If the player is still missing in Admin -> Players, wait and check again.
For full freshness and delay behavior, see Logs import concept.
What happens after a successful link
- The player account is connected.
- The player can enter the shop with the correct identity.
- The server can apply access rules automatically.
- If Discord is connected on this server, players may also receive a welcome message and role updates.
Player position verification
In the server settings, you can enable or disable account claiming position verification.
- Adds an extra security step during linking.
- Better protection against account claiming abuse.
- Can make first-time linking take a bit longer.
Advice: Only enable this if you have issues with linking-abuse. This will make linking harder for your players.
Recommended setup for a smooth onboarding experience
- Keep position verification on for safety.
- Turn on auto-whitelist for faster player access.
- Keep list synchronization on so approvals are applied reliably.
- Connect Discord if your community uses it for support and roles.
Then review player feedback and adjust strictness if your community needs a different balance between security and speed.
