Voice and text chat

Some pages have a chat room attached to them: players who are on the same page can write to each other and, if they want to, talk. Today that is the roulette table (one room per server โ€” everyone at the wheel) and every poker table (one room per table).

The room belongs to the page. Leaving the page leaves the room, and there is nothing to set up per page.

Switching it onโ€‹

The feature is off until you enable Voice and text chat under Settings โ†’ General. While it is off, none of the chat and voice controls appear.

What players seeโ€‹

Chat and voice are part of the table, not a window on top of it.

  • On a wide screen the chat stands as a column on the right of the game, the same in roulette and poker: microphone and sound at the top, who is there, the conversation, and the message box.
  • On a phone the game keeps the whole screen. Three buttons โ€” microphone, sound and chat โ€” sit in the game's header (in poker held upright, above the top-right corner of the table). The chat button counts new messages and opens the chat over the table.
  • New messages show up at the table. In poker a message appears as a bubble next to the sender's seat; messages from spectators, and every message in roulette, fade in as short lines over the table.
  • Whoever is talking lights up โ€” their seat in poker, their name chip in roulette. The roulette table shows a chip for everyone at the wheel, not only those who have placed a bet; bettors come first.
  • You hear the others straight away, with your own microphone off โ€” there is nothing to join. The browser plays sound only after the page has been touched, so it starts with your first tap. The browser asks for microphone access the first time you switch the microphone on.
  • The sound button mutes everyone for you, for example to play in peace. The choice is remembered on that device.
  • Everyone can also mute a single person for themselves in the chat's list of people, without affecting anybody else.

Who may do whatโ€‹

Whoever opens a poker table can set speaking and writing to players only, everyone or nobody; an admin host can change it later (see Poker). In a tournament, players who are already out still count as players.

On top of that, two access rights decide whether someone may add anything:

  • live.speak โ€” speak in voice chat
  • live.write โ€” write in chat

Setting either to Deny on a player (or on a group) silences them permanently โ€” they keep listening and reading, they just cannot talk or write. Changes take effect in rooms immediately, including for people who are already connected; sitting down at a poker table or standing up switches the microphone on the spot.

Moderationโ€‹

Players with admin.live.moderate see extra controls in the room:

  • Delete a message โ€” it disappears for everybody.
  • Remove someone from the room.
  • Ban someone for 15 minutes, 1 hour or 24 hours from voice and chat on the whole server.

Every one of these actions is recorded in the audit trail.

Privacyโ€‹

  • Voice is never recorded. It is passed through live and not stored anywhere.
  • Chat messages are kept for 7 days, so moderators can follow up on a complaint, and are then deleted. A message a moderator deleted is hidden immediately and removed with the rest.
